Kristina Paabus uses geometric elements to explore the structure found in the composition of Sonata #6. She utilized different hardness of graphite to create shift in value, reflecting shifts she heard in the tone of music. A shift in visual perception is created through layering and a sense of transparency. The grid format and oval shapes recall the structural elements of the score.
In her work, Paabus is interested in abstraction as metaphor for the common codes that create a shared experience. As a first-generation Estonian-American, Paabus has been influenced by growing up in between these two cultures, histories, and locations. Interpreting the shared experience of music she created a bold, yet subtle representation that expresses the nuances found in Ramer’s Sonata #6.
