Katie Mongoven, Sonata #6, 2021, Hand-dyed indigo cotton embroidery, 18.25 inches diameter

Katie Mongoven related the visual aspects of the performance of Sonata #6 to the process of creating her piece. The physicality of arm clusters reminded her of harvesting, stomping, boiling and fermenting indigo plants to create the dye used in the embroidery. The geometric composition and the needlework combine to illustrate the interweaving aspects of the sonata’s melodies. Changes in the direction of thread delineate shape and reflect light in different ways. Our perception of forms shift as Mongoven unfolds the stories that shape her life.
